Small enough to move between vehicles on a whim, capable enough to freeze your food overnight, and versatile enough to follow you from the campsite to the backyard — the ICECO APL20 redefines what a portable fridge can be.

Tested: ICECO APL20 Portable Fridge Review: Compact Cooling That Goes Everywhere You Do

Not every piece of overland gear needs to be reserved for long expeditions into the backcountry. The ICECO APL20 portable fridge proves that some of the most useful equipment is the gear you end up using every day.

Unlike larger, more cumbersome fridges, the APL20 and its power bank are easy to move and place anywhere.

Whether you’re heading to camp for the weekend, running errands across town, or spending an afternoon in the backyard, this compact 12V fridge has become one of the most versatile pieces of gear we own.

With a 20-liter (21-quart) capacity, the APL20 is among the smaller portable fridges available today. On paper, that might sound like a compromise, especially when larger 40- and 60-liter models dominate the overlanding scene. In practice, however, its compact dimensions become one of its greatest strengths.

Weighing less than 23 pounds before being loaded with food and drinks, the APL20 is easy to carry. That portability encourages something many larger fridges rarely do—actually moving it.

Instead of dedicating it to a single vehicle, we’ve found ourselves transferring it between multiple vehicles depending on the day’s plans.

Those who do not wish to have a dedicated cargo area build opt for removable solutions. The APL20 is perfect for temporary and transitional use.

Whether it’s the overland build, the daily driver, or even sitting beside the patio while entertaining guests, the APL20 goes wherever it’s needed.

Its lightweight aluminum construction also gives it a premium feel while helping keep overall weight to a minimum.

Compressor Performance: Fridge and Freezer in One

Don’t let its footprint fool you. Inside, the APL20 uses a 12V compressor cooling system capable of reaching well below freezing temperatures, allowing it to function as either a portable fridge or a portable freezer.

APL20’s temperature controls are simple and easy to use. An ICECO app is available for smartphone control as well.

For weekend camping trips, we typically run it as a refrigerator to keep drinks, sandwich ingredients, fruit, and snacks cold without dealing with melting ice. On other outings we’ve used it as a freezer for ice cream, frozen meals, and frozen meat destined for the grill later that evening.

Unlike traditional coolers, there’s no standing water to contend with and no need to continually replenish ice. Every bit of interior volume remains usable storage space.

The single-zone interior is divided into two compartments. The larger, deeper section handles most of the storage duties, while a shallower upper compartment keeps smaller items within easy reach.

Don’t let its 20L capacity fool you. The APL20 fit more food and drink than we expected.

It’s a simple layout that works well and makes the most of the available space.

The Magnetic Power Bank: Refrigeration Anywhere

The feature that truly separates the APL20 from many portable fridges is ICECO’s optional 250Wh Magnetic Power Bank.

Rather than relying solely on a dedicated 12-volt outlet or a heavy portable power station, the lightweight battery can power the APL20 independently, creating a completely self-contained and easily portable refrigeration system.

The power bank features a rubberized magnetic base that allows it to securely attach to any steel surface. Because the APL20 uses an aluminum housing, the battery won’t magnetically attach to the fridge itself. However, many of ICECO’s other portable fridges include integrated steel mounting points that allow the power bank to attach directly, creating a clean, cable-managed solution.

The power bank’s magnetic base can stick to any metal surface. It’s also covered with rubber for a non-slip, non-scratch placement.

That opens up all kinds of possibilities. Need to move the fridge from the truck to the campsite? Simply pick it up and go.

Want cold drinks beside the campfire? Bring the fridge with you. Hosting a barbecue in the backyard? The fridge doesn’t need to stay inside the vehicle.

Even around the house, it becomes useful as an extra refrigerator for parties or gatherings.

During testing, the APL20 maintained frozen contents for more than 24 hours on a single charge from the 250Wh magnetic battery pack, without any connection to a vehicle or external power station.

The magnetic power bank can be easily removed for charging.

Runtime will naturally vary depending on ambient temperature, thermostat setting, and how frequently the lid is opened, but for overnight outings, day trips, or weekend adventures, the combination proved surprisingly capable.

The convenience of having refrigeration independent of a vehicle cannot be overstated.

Everyday Use: Why This Fridge Works Beyond the Campsite

What surprised us most wasn’t how well the APL20 worked at camp—it was how often we found ourselves using it around town. In fact, it’s become one of the most frequently used pieces of gear we own.

Imagine stopping at a grocery store for meat, dairy, or frozen foods before continuing on with the rest of your errands. Normally, you’d need to head home before everything warmed up.

aIMG_7370

The APL20 pretty much lives in our daily driver until its called up for the occassional weekend camping trip.

With the APL20 riding in the back, that pressure disappears. Need to make another stop at a warehouse store? No problem. Running across town after buying groceries? No worries.

Picking up lunch at your favorite restaurant but not heading home immediately? Leftovers stay safely refrigerated until you’re ready to eat them later.

Whether you’re using it as a car fridge for daily errands or a camping companion on weekend adventures, that flexibility means it rarely sits unused between trips.

Who Is the ICECO APL20 Best For?

Larger portable fridges certainly have their place, especially for extended overland travel or family camping trips. But they’re also heavier, take up considerably more cargo space, and often remain permanently installed in a vehicle simply because moving them isn’t convenient.

aIMG_7368

Good for extended trips and daily errands. We routinely move the APL20 between vehicles.

The APL20 takes a different approach. Its smaller footprint means it fits comfortably behind seats, inside SUVs, pickup trucks, vans, and even compact crossovers. It’s equally at home as a truck fridge, an SUV travel companion, or supplemental cold storage for road trips.

Unlike many products marketed as an electric cooler, the APL20’s compressor technology allows it to function as a true refrigerator or freezer rather than simply cooling below ambient temperature.

When the trip is over, it’s easy enough to carry back inside the garage or house until the next outing.

For solo travelers, couples, photographers, day adventurers, and anyone looking for supplemental cold storage, the 20-liter capacity strikes an excellent balance between usable volume and portability.

ICECO APL20 Verdict: Is It Worth It?

The ICECO APL20 isn’t trying to replace the massive dual-zone refrigerators found in dedicated expedition vehicles. Instead, it fills a different role—one that arguably fits more people’s lifestyles.

Its combination of lightweight construction, freezer capability, compact size, and the optional magnetic battery transforms it from simply another portable fridge into something much more versatile.

aIMG_4879

It’s equally at home on an overlanding trip, during a weekend camping getaway, while running errands around town, or sitting beside the barbecue in the backyard.

For overlanders, weekend campers, and everyday drivers alike, the APL20 delivers dependable 12V refrigeration in a package that’s genuinely easy to live with.

Sometimes the best gear isn’t the equipment with the biggest specifications. It’s the gear you end up using every day. The ICECO APL20 has become exactly that.
